John Mulaney X Erika Jayne, The Most Ambitious Crossover Of All Time

Comedian John Mulaney embraces a Real Housewives deep cut for his new children’s variety show on Netflix.

John Mulaney’s forthcoming Netflix special will pull from a well of great wisdom. In a Monday visit to “The Tonight Show,” the comedian said his new program “begins with a maxim that I find to be quite true.”

The maxim is as follows: “Do you know who tells the truth? Drunks and children.” Its source? Pressed by an inquisitive Jimmy Fallon, Mulaney explained, “That is from Erika Jayne of the ‘Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,’ season nine, episode 20.”

He’s right. Although, to be technical, the quote should actually be sourced to Erika Girardi, given that she was speaking in her personal capacity at the time. Erika Jayne is the name Girardi reserves for the stage. (And ShoeDazzle.)

Mulaney continued to describe the origins of his treasured maxim: “It’s right after they go to the wine tasting thing where Teddi and Kyle get way too drunk. The next day Erika says, ‘You know who tells the truth? Drunks and children.’ I was working on the special at the time and I was in one of those moods where I went, ‘Thats going in.'”

Indeed, frustrated with the drunken antics of Kyle Richards and Teddi Mellencamp (yes, the progeny of that Mellencamp), Girardi dispensed this particular pearl of wisdom after enduring a historically wild night in Provence. Wit is her signature, making Girardi perhaps the single most quotable Real Housewife. (And make no mistake, the competition is stiffer than a Skinnygirl Margarita.) A self-described “enigma wrapped in a riddle and cash,” she’s also proven to be one of the wisest women on Bravo in her four years as a Housewife. (The competition is less stiff in that department.)

It’s a good line, one that will assuredly burnish Mulaney’s Netflix special. Described by The A.V. Club as “a musical variety show featuring Mulaney, a bunch of little kids, and a throwback Sesame Street vibe,” “John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch” drops on Christmas Eve.
