After nearly 40 years of wreaking havoc on the Republican Party and nation, the longest-serving Senate leader in history Mitch McConnell announced on Wednesday he’ll retire from GOP leadership — in November.
The news was a long time coming considering the 82-year-old has long held the title of most disliked politician in the country. McConnell’s recent medical snafus and political pushback including an unsuccessful ouster only added to the reasons he should step away from running the Senate GOP.
There’s no doubt McConnell spent decades doing unfathomable damage to his party and his country by continually working with Democrats and overriding his voters’ wishes on the Second Amendment, protecting the unborn, keeping taxpayer dollars from abortion, the border invasion, funding proxy wars, Department of Justice and FBI corruption, and choking conservative campaigns.

When he wasn’t sacrificing our nation’s security to pine for unfettered funding for a corrupt Eastern European country, he and his wife Elaine Chao were playing the stock market and getting “rich on China.”
Time and time again, McConnell has demonstrated hate for Republican voters and our crumbling country. Not even his modest track record on confirming Republican-nominated judges and justices could save him from the inevitable end.
McConnell said from the Senate floor that his decision to step back is rooted in knowing “when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter,” something he called “one of life’s most underappreciated talents.” Senate insiders admit, however, that McConnell’s announcement is a last-ditch effort to maintain control of a “cratering” conference gaining momentum to remove him from leadership.
The only way McConnell can even attempt to redeem the mess he created is by retiring today. Unfortunately for Americans, McConnell swore to see his time as Senate minority leader all the way through January 2025, when Senate Republicans’ new leader officially begins his duties.
“I’m not going anywhere anytime soon,” McConnell said. “…I still have enough gas in the tank to thoroughly disappoint my critics, and I intend to do so with all the enthusiasm which they have become accustomed.”
It’s clear from his track record and insistence on staying in leadership until the last minute that McConnell doesn’t care about the country at all. If he did, he wouldn’t be bragging about how well “I know the politics within my party at this particular moment in time” and “I have many faults; misunderstanding politics is not one of them” mere weeks after he tried to sell out the nation to pass Democrats’ amnesty wish list.
Since he joined the Senate in 1985, McConnell has done nothing but misunderstand American politics and disregard how the country feels about the collapse of our country’s most valued principles and norms. That’s why he has to go now, not in November, and certainly not next year.
