Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, died on Friday morning, the royal family announced.
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle,” a statement on the royal family website read. “Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”

Philip and the queen were married for more than 70 years. During this time, the Duke of Edinburgh made countless visits and appearances around the world as he offered support to his wife while she continued to run the monarchy. The former Royal Navy lieutenant retired from the public eye in 2017 but still made headlines as the royal family drama with his children and grandchildren continued.
The Duke was often in and out of hospitals over the last few years as various pre-existing conditions and ailments continued to plague him in his old age. Philip’s most recent hospitalization came in February after sources in Buckingham Palace reported he was not feeling well. He was later discharged after spending a month under the care of the medical staff at King Edward VII’s Hospital in central London.
United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson lamented Philip’s death along with many others and said the Duke will be remembered for “his steadfast support for her majesty the queen, not just as her consort by her side every day of her reign, but as her husband, her strength and stay of more than 70 years.”
“Prince Philip earned the affection of generations here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth, and around the world,” Johnson said. “He was an environmentalist and a champion of the natural world long before it was fashionable.”
