President Donald Trump has announced he will nominate Brett Kavanaugh, a federal appeals judge in Washington DC, to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the U.S. Supreme Court.

The 53-year-old has served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C Circuit since 2006, when he was appointed to the position by President George W. Bush.

Before his tenure on the D.C Circuit, Kavanaugh clerked for Justice Kennedy — who has long been regarded as the swing vote on the Supreme Court between its originalist and living Constitution wings.
