The very unsatisfying truth about these midterm elections is that Republicans have done next to nothing to deserve maintaining any government power. At the same time, Democrats shouldn’t be given the opportunity to take us back to the godawful Biden years.
That’s exactly what they’ll do the second they have the chance. Democrats in the most competitive races across the country have done exceedingly well at insisting to voters their focus is “affordability.” They talk about grocery and gas prices with autistic levels of concentration, and though they have no real proposals to reverse our seemingly endless cost nightmare, it’s working to their advantage because it’s President Trump’s decision to start a war in the Middle East that reignited the inflation surge that up until then had been quickly cooling.
Voters want prices lowered. Under Republican government, prices are going up. What’s worse, they didn’t need to. That’s the result of a choice made by the current administration. It’s only logical that voters would want to try something else in the next election. But no matter what Democrats are saying about “affordability,” trust that their priorities are anything but lowering prices.
Don’t take my word for it. The New York Times editorial this week urging everyone to vote Democrat explained what the party will do if and when it takes control of Congress. Hint: It’s not “immediately work to end the war and bring prices down.”
“Take a moment to imagine how Washington could change if Democrats win control of the House of Representatives,” the paper said. “Mr. Trump’s legislative ambitions will be largely ended; he will not be able to pass more tax cuts that worsen the national debt. Democrats can instead use must-pass spending bills to restore money that was improperly cut from Medicaid, schools, scientific research and disease prevention.”
By “restore money that was improperly cut,” the Times means that Democrats will refuse to pass budget bills that don’t include funding for all the multibillion-dollar scam projects that help fund their cause, like USAID and every anti-American NGO. When they say “scientific research and disease prevention,” that’s what they’re referring to.
The editorial went on to encourage Democrats in power to heavily rely on “hearings, subpoenas and more” to “hold the president and his appointees responsible.” And why stop at government officials? There’s plenty of harassment to go around for Trump supporters! “Even if Mr. Trump and his aides illegally defy subpoenas,” the Times said, “the House can summon corporate executives and others who have enabled him.”
In the event Democrats secure the Senate, too, the Times suggested they block future political appointees and, of course, Supreme Court nominees. The editorial said only judges who “uphold the law” should be confirmed, which of course means judges who will reliably side with Democrats in their blood-thirsty crusades to imprison their political opponents.
None of this will lower the cost of gas and groceries. To the contrary, resuming the flood of money to Democrat priorities — mass immigration and “green energy” — will only serve to keep them rising rapidly and permanently. And the rest of it is just to scratch their interminable itch to make life miserable for Trump associates and anyone who ever so much as had a thought of supporting him.
It would be, for all intents and purposes, a return to the Biden years. Higher prices, lower living standards, and more international conflict.
Things are the way they are right now because of a war. Prices will fall when it ends. A Democrat Congress will have no control over that. I’m not even convinced they want to. Democrats like squeezing the middle class. But if and when they do gain power, they will be able to make everything else so much worse for everyone.
