On this episode of The Federalist Radio Hour, Amber Smith, author, veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and deputy assistant to the Secretary of Defense during the Trump administration, joins Culture Editor Emily Jashinsky to discuss how U.S. leaders spent two decades lying to taxpayers about the war in Afghanistan.

“Anyone who spent some time in Afghanistan knew that when the U.S. left, eventually the Taliban would come to power once again,” Smith said. “The Afghan military and the government there was not self-sustainable. They only survived in the 20 years that we were there because we were propping them up physically with the United States military leading them and then, with, you know, the $2 trillion that we gave them in taxpayer dollars to build up the military.”

The situation, Smith said, is growing more dangerous by the minute.

“I’m nervous. In those very hectic and chaotic situations, you know, it can go wrong very quickly when people are nervous,” Smith said. “…when it’s mad chaos like that, things can go wrong very quickly.”
