Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg announced Friday she is undergoing chemotherapy for a recurrence of cancer on her liver.

In a statement, Ginsburg, 87, said initial immunotherapy “proved unsuccessful” but that chemotherapy “is yielding positive results.”

“Satisfied that my treatment course is now clear, I am providing this information,” Ginsburg said after it was reported the liberal justice was treated for an infection earlier this week at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, which was unrelated to the cancer treatment that began on May 19 of this year.

“I am tolerating chemotherapy well and am encouraged by the success of my current treatment. I will continue bi-weekly chemotherapy to keep my cancer at bay, and am able to maintain an active daily routine,” Ginsburg added. “Throughout, I have kept up with opinion writing and all other Court work. I have often said I would remain a member of the Court as long as I can do the job full steam. I remain fully able to do that.”

Ginsburg’s resurgence of liver cancer is just the latest major health concern the justice has dealt with after battling off cancers in her colon, lungs, and pancreas where she fended off cancer twice.

In 2018, Ginsburg was hospitalized after falling in her office and fracturing multiple ribs.
