One major fallacy that abortion advocates peddle is that babies in the womb are not really human, so they don’t have rights. In response to recent pro-life bills, Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently took to Twitter stating, “6 weeks pregnant = 2 weeks late on your period. Most of the men writing these bills don’t know the first thing about a woman’s body outside of the things they want from it. It’s relatively common for a woman to have a late period + not be pregnant. So this is a backdoor ban.”
With that very statement, Ocasio-Cortez tragically dismissed the pain and agony of a mother losing her child at an early stage. By arguing that a baby in the womb is simply a trivial “clump of cells,” the left alienates and demeans mothers who have miscarried or delivered a stillborn child. The message they send is, why grieve? That’s not a baby.
Pro-life Americans have been bombarded with attacks from Democratic politicians and members of the media on the inherent value of unborn children. This comes as no surprise to pro-lifers, since abortion “rights” have become one of the major tenets of the Democratic Party.
Yet abortion advocates who claim they care for women don’t seem to care for women who have miscarried. Abortion providers know that a baby in the womb is truly a human being—a sonogram or a basic understanding of biology can tell you that. However, this inconvenient truth doesn’t support their cause, so they ignore it, and cause mothers who have lost a child needless suffering.
Pro-choicers must understand their own hypocrisy when they claim that a baby in the womb is just fetal tissue then also say they sympathize with a woman who miscarried her baby. They’re making the mistake of assuming a child is more valuable simply because the child’s mother wanted the child.
To further demonstrate the view of abortion supporters, read what CNN contributor Christine Quinn recently said on TV: “When a woman is pregnant, that is not a human being inside of her.” The vast majority of Americans think this is bonkers. If the child growing inside of a pregnant mother is not really a human, then what is it? Quinn’s statement is scientifically incorrect; it also indicates that she believes a mother only lost only a clump of tissue.
Yet at six weeks of gestation (meaning two weeks after a missed period), a baby in the womb is developing a face and a brain. The legs and arms are just small buds. And of course, the baby’s tiny heart is beating at a steady rhythm.
Amelia Bonow created the “Shout Your Abortion” movement to empower women to not apologize for having an abortion. However, mothers who have lost their children to miscarriage and stillbirth are often perplexed and troubled while other mothers giddily recount their abortions.
In 1973, the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision stated that restricting a “woman’s right to choose” was unconstitutional and violated the privacy clause of the 14th Amendment. The decision made access to abortion the law of the land.
Today, abortion advocates are using Roe to justify abortions at any stage of pregnancy, including partial-birth abortions and even, as of late, infanticide. While Roe is still the law of the land, science is on the side of pro-life advocates as doctors are making more discoveries in the early stages of a baby’s development in the womb, hence solidifying an unborn human’s value and validating a mother’s grief at losing children even early in pregnancy.
The next fateful step in advancing the abortion agenda occurred when nearly every Democrat in Congress voted against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. This means the majority of Democrats have now not only dismissed the pain of a mother who has miscarried, but also the mothers of stillborn babies. They dismiss the deaths of babies before they can survive outside the womb, in addition now to the deaths of babies who could survive outside the womb with proper medical attention.
While the beliefs of many on the left are indeed preposterous and demeaning, they, fortunately, do not reflect public opinion. A recent Marist Poll found that three out of four Americans prefer strict abortion restrictions. This suggests that most Americans believe babies in the womb deserve protection because they are innocent human beings with intrinsic value. Not only do most Americans disagree with pro-abortion talking points, but women who have suffered miscarriages at any stage of pregnancy are especially hurt by these sentiments.
Pro-life advocates value life from conception until natural death. While many Democrats see a clump of cells with no value or potential, pro-life individuals see a human child with a life worth living, honoring, and fighting for, even if that child’s heart were to naturally stop beating.
