Payton: Media Needs To Calm Down Or Risk Becoming (Even More) Irrelevant

‘They have this attitude like Americans are a bunch of knuckle-dragging losers that don’t know what’s good for them.’

Federalist staff writer Bre Payton joined “Fox and Friends” Tuesday morning to discuss why Donald Trump’s tweets frustrate the media.

Payton pointed out that the media got worked up into a frenzy over Trump’s decision to elude the press pool during a steak dinner last month. This week, several news outlets mimicked the Obama administration’s talking points that Trump’s decision to accept a phone call from the president of Taiwan was “damaging” relations with China.

“They really have exposed themselves as carrying water for the liberal elites and those who are willing to completely write off [many in] the American electorate and all of the driving forces that carried Trump to victory,” she said.

“It’s really frustrating to watch the media act like it’s this holy, perfect entity that’s always been objective,” she said, referring to earlier points in journalism’s history when sensationalism and “yellow journalism” also pervaded the industry.

In the years leading up to the American Revolution, loyalist newspapers were quite prominent throughout the colonies. Yet the American colonists were still able to figure out that they wanted to overthrow King George without the media telling them to do it, she said.

“They have this attitude like Americans are a bunch of knuckle-dragging losers that don’t know what’s good for them and need to be told,” Payton said. “It’s really just quite false.”
