The main controversy of asking about citizenship on the census stems from the much bigger points of what it means to be American and how a representative republic in the 21st century is supposed to work.
Counting illegal immigrants in the census would warp our elections and flies in the face of any common-sense interpretation of the U.S. Constitution.
Citizenship is not defined by one’s mindset, but by law. That’s the whole reason we’re even having this discussion.
