The West is in a civil war between those who want to preserve it for their progeny and those who want to destroy it. For those who want to end Western civilization, one of the most effective tools is mass migration. Anti-Western elites are using this tool in Australia, Canada, the European Union (EU), and — before President Donald Trump — the U.S. to destroy Western civilization. The EU elite do not get to destroy Western civilization; the American people get a veto. It is time to exercise it.
Although the date of Jan. 27, 2026, does not mean much to most Americans, it should. It was an epochal day. In history, it is usually difficult to find a specific date when a civilization died. In this case, the world has an exact date. It was last Tuesday. On that day, the Spanish Socialist-led government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez decided to grant residency and work permits to more than 500,000 illegal immigrants who arrived at least five months before Dec. 31, 2025, and have no criminal record.
In reality, the 500,000 mostly young men who benefit will soon be joined by family members, who in turn will bring in additional relatives, so 500,000 really means something closer to 4 million at a minimum.
Also on Jan. 27, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a new trade deal. This includes an India-EU Comprehensive Framework of Cooperation on Mobility. This mobility agreement “will ease movement” from India to EU members for highly skilled workers, students, researchers, and seasonal workers. It also will create the first EU Legal Gateway Office in India, to add rocket fuel to the population movement from India to the EU.
The agreement opens the doors to what is sure to be the movement of tens of millions of Indians to Europe. Applying the immigration realism of a “rule of eight,” that means many tens of millions of Indians could be living in Europe starting shortly after 2027, when the agreement comes into effect. By the time Trump leaves office, many millions more Indians will be living in Europe, many drawn to Ireland (already about 16 percent of the 5.4 million population is foreign) since it is English-speaking and close to the United Kingdom.
Destroying the West
If you wanted to save the West, this is the last thing you would do. If you wanted to destroy it, it is high on the list of action items, along with censorship, which the EU is also doing as Brussels’ authoritarianism hardens.
The EU leadership, the UK’s Labour government of Keir Starmer, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Australia’s Labor government led by Anthony Albanese are all on the same side of the civil war. And they are winning.
America’s problems with the EU are fundamental and as irreconcilable as anything that divided the Blue and the Gray or Roundhead and Cavalier. The Trump administration’s release of the National Security Strategy of the United States captured this great division when it noted that Europe was on the path to “civilizational erasure.” Western civilization is being obliterated. As the strategy says: “The larger issues facing Europe include activities of the European Union and other transnational bodies that undermine political liberty and sovereignty, migration policies that are transforming the continent and creating strife, censorship of free speech and suppression of political opposition, cratering birthrates, and loss of national identities and self-confidence.”
It continued: “Should present trends continue, the continent will be unrecognizable in 20 years or less.” Given the new EU-India agreement, the smart money is on less, much less.
In his Davos address on Jan. 21, President Trump said: “The explosion of prosperity and progress that built the West did not come from our tax codes; it ultimately came from our very special culture. This is the precious inheritance that America and Europe have in common… We have to defend that culture and rediscover the spirit that lifted the West from the depths of the Dark Ages to the pinnacle of human achievement.”
Trump Must Act
It is time to act upon the problem that Trump and the strategy identified. The Trump administration needs to take the gloves off to win this civil war. If the EU is determined to obliterate Western civilization, the U.S. can increase the costs to the EU to unacceptable levels.
The Trump administration must act with urgency and boldly to save the West. The first step is to recognize that the EU is a threat to the survival of Western civilization. Next, the administration must formulate a strategy for victory over the EU.
To advance that strategy, Uncle Sam has many tools in the toolkit. First, there are tariffs, a favorite tool of the Trump administration. The U.S. can impose larger tariffs on EU goods. That will get the elites’ attention. But it may not be enough. The balance of resolve may still favor the EU — that is, the EU leadership may be willing to pay that price to destroy Western civilization.
In addition to tariffs, other actions may be pursued. The U.S. may withhold intelligence and military cooperation. Those steps are not taken lightly but are taken nonetheless to save something more important than trade or military cooperation: Western civilization. Moreover, the U.S. may work with Europeans to encourage “exits” from the EU, such as Brexit in 2016, when the UK voted to leave the EU. While Germany and France will likely never leave the EU as it is a mechanism for their power, other states such as Ireland, Italy, and Poland might. The U.S. could create a trade bloc of states to offset the EU.
Trump should create an Office of Remigration to advance policies to reverse immigration, to promote those policies in the U.S., Canada, the UK, and EU and link those policies to direct and tangible action. If an agreement is reached with the EU, it must have specific numbers and dates for remigration, as the EU leadership has every incentive to wait out Trump.
The EU elite are our enemy in this civil war; it is time to respond accordingly. Trump’s second term cannot be simply a battlefield victory in the civil war over the West but must result in total victory in the war.
