NFL Quarterback Drew Brees Speaks Out Against Players Kneeling During The National Anthem

“We still have a long way to go. But I think what you do by standing there and showing respect to the flag with your hand over your heart is it shows unity. It shows that we are all in this together,” Brees said.

In a recent interview with Yahoo Finance, NFL star quarterback Drew Brees shared his thoughts about “players kneeling again when the NFL season starts.”

In his initial comment, Brees clearly stated his position on the issue.

I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country,” Brees said.

Brees continued his sentiments by explaining that his family’s military history heavily contributes to his feelings about the subject.

“I envision my two grandfathers, who fought for the country during World War II, one in the Army, one in the Marine Corp, both risking their lives to protect our country and trying to make our country and our world a better place,” he said.

Brees’s respect for the flag, however, isn’t limited to just the military. He also acknowledged there are many throughout the history of the United States who lived through tough times and experienced great hardship to get to the present.

“In many cases, it brings me to tears thinking about all that has been sacrificed,” he said. “Not just those in the military, but for that matter, those throughout the Civil Rights Movements of the ’60s and all that has been endured by so many people up until this point.”

Despite his praise and regard for progress in the United States, Brees acknowledges that there is still more work to be done.

“Is everything right with our country right now?,” he asked. “No it’s not. We still have a long way to go. But I think what you do by standing there and showing respect to the flag with your hand over your heart is it shows unity. It shows that we are all in this together, we can all do better, and that we are all part of the solution.”

Although some people praised Brees’s comments, others said they were disappointed in his response. Dov Kleiman, an independent reporter that covers NFL news, retweeted the interview commenting “Drew Brees is still in this mindset? unfreaking believable.”

Kleiman continued in the thread by claiming that Brees’s teammates should teach him better.

Saints players need to educate drew brees – his statement is embarrassing at this point of time,” tweeted Kleiman. “It was a dumb thing to say then and it’s especially dumb now not to get that peaceful kneeing was about *injustice* and *police brutality* and had nothing to do with the american flag.”
