August dressing can be tricky. While your sartorial imagination might already be crushing on plaid and sipping PSLs, it’s still 90 degrees and sticky out there, folks.
Here are a few ideas for pieces you can buy for now, but lend themselves perfectly to the autumn weather we know is just around the corner.
1. A midi slip dress. J Crew, $128

Wear now with strappy sandals and sea spray tousled hair; wear later with a blazer and boots. I prefer mine in a color that works both ways, like orange or mustard yellow, both of which can be worn with white or gold during the summer and burgundy or navy in the fall.
2. A light blazer. H&M, $49.99
Toss it over denim cutoffs and a graphic tee in the August evenings for that so-trendy ‘80s revival look, and layer it over turtlenecks and sweaters (or turtleneck sweaters) in the fall.
3. High-waisted denim and a tomboy tee-shirt. Madewell tee, $39.50; J Crew jeans, $110.
In August, as is with slides and a hair scarf for the perfect errand-running outfit. Later, with a classic trench or leather moto and knobbly scarf for pumpkin picking.
4. A satin skirt. Zara, $39.90
Wear now with a casual knotted tee or oxford and white sneakers, switch out for a drapey sweater, tights, and mid-shin sock or knee-high boots in October.
Pick a versatile hue like this Zara skirt’s bubblegum pink, that can pop with white or bright red in the summer, but goes well with beiges and browns in fall.
5. A floral maxi dress. byTiMo, $39 (Rent the Runway)
Dark florals are the some of the easiest patterns to transition between seasons, along with leopard print.
