In less than 24 hours, one woman garnered national attention as she announced her bid to unseat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in 2020. Her name is Scherie Murray.

Murray is the fourth Republican to file paperwork to run against self-declared socialist Ocasio-Cortez. The New York Post reported that former police officer John Cummings, journalist Ruth Papazian, and building superintendent Miguel Hernandez also plan on running against the freshwoman incumbent.

While all four have officially announced their bids to oust AOC, the national spotlight has all fallen only on Murray. Both Cummings and Hernandez have an online following of 11 and 48 people, respectively, while Murray broke 66,000 followers on Twitter today.

The contenders’ district, NY-14, is a largely Democratic territory. Ocasio-Cortez won her election with 78 percent of the total votes.

Republican strategists know what an uphill battle it will be for Murray and the other three Republicans who are running in the almost entirely blue district against a celebrity congresswoman. Yet Ocasio-Cortez’s fame is precisely what helped Murray to garner so much national attention in the past day.

“There’s a crisis in Queens and it’s called AOC. She isn’t worried about us – she’s worried about being famous. That’s why I’m running for Congress,” Murray tweeted.

Murray immigrated to the United States from Jamaica when she was nine years old. She grew up in Southeast Queens.

Murray worked as a systems analyst for the New York City MTA Bus Depot while completing her associates degree in computer science and a bachelor of science in broadcast journalism.

She is also a businesswoman. She started a company with a mission to address the lack of minorities in media. The company is called The Esemel Group.

With her experience in business and local Republican politics, Murray is running on a platform to #UnitetheFight. Her first official campaign video, entitled “Bridges,” has also drawn attention to her message of unity over partisanship.

The timing of Murray’s announcement comes as Ocasio-Cortez and “The Squad” have garnered a lot of attention for causing inter-party fighting among top-ranking Democrats. In recent days, Ocasio-Cortez’s Chief of Staff Saikat Chakrabarti has also caused inter-party fighting. Rahm Emanuel called Chakrabarti a “snot-nosed punk” for attacking moderate Democrats.

Regardless of Republican Party in-fighting over President Trump’s tweets, Murray is running on a campaign of unity, and her message has been perfectly timed and well-received.
