Tim Tebow, Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL quarterback whose been playing minor league baseball since 2016, was asked how he balances being a professional athlete and charity work. He stunned the reporters by giving a clear-cut explanation of what it means to fulfill one’s vocation as a Christian.
“So much about sports is handling pressure,” Tebow said. “Well what pressure do you have if you’re 0-12 and you’re at the plate versus someone that is fighting for their life?”
“That’s why you’re able to handle sports as a game, because it still is,” he said. “Yeah we can pursue it, we can give so much of our time, energy, and effort to it, but at the end of the day, I know that’s not why I’m here. It’s not my biggest purpose, it’s not my biggest calling, it’s not how I want to be known in my life.”
The video, which was posted last February, has been making the rounds after the New York Mets recently announced Tebow would train with them during spring training again this year — for the second year in a row.
Tebow, who is a Christian and frequently talks about his faith, said he doesn’t want to be known as a baseball player or a football player.
“I want my life to be so much more than that,” he said. “I want to be someone that was known for bringing faith, hope, and love to those needing a brighter day in their darkest hour of need.”
“That is something that is a life calling for me and that is so much bigger than sports,” Tebow added. “But I am so grateful for sports because it’s given me a platform to share and love and care for people, so I wouldn’t trade that for anything.”
Over the weekend, the Tim Tebow Foundation hosted it’s annual “Night to Shine” where 175,000 volunteers hosted prom nights for 90,000teens with special needs in churches and schools across the country.
