Speaker of the House John Boehner announced to the House Republican Conference this morning that he planned to resign the speakership and his seat in Congress later this year, according to several lawmakers who were in the room.

Shortly after reports of Boehner’s resignation announcement started surfacing on social media, the New York Times posted a short blurb noting that Boehner’s aides had confirmed the resignation rumors:

WASHINGTON — Speaker John A. Boehner will resign from Congress and give up his House seat at the end of October, according to aides in his office.
