This month’s edition of the ever-liberal Christian Century dumped a cover story imploring all God’s children to “understand polyamory” — a strained propaganda piece penned by a scholar puffing his upcoming book: Poly Theology: In Praise of Unnatural Love. It’s “an invitation to embrace an unnatural, unrepressed Christianity” as if anyone is seeking that. His essay ends with this claim: “[Polyamory] is here to stay, and it is past time for Christians to engage it thoughtfully, humbly, and openly.” He is not a lone voice.
Andrew Amelang leads the Libertarian Party of Texas and is the father of 12 children. He’s also a worship leader for an organization called “Biblical Families.” His official biography at the group’s website proudly boasts he has a wife named Cheryl and two very long-term live-in girlfriends, Ginny and Ann. He calls it “plural marriage,” but of course it’s not. No civilized society that honors women tolerates collecting them. Amelang is a polyamorist, persuading women normative monogamy is not in their best interest.
Polyamory is unfortunately having its day.
Eleven U.S. cities now proudly offer the poly-minded various bundles of legal protections. Seattle’s clownish city council was the latest to do so, giving the movement its first truly landmark development.
Seattle unanimously beknighted group-sex participants with legal protected class status and deemed it a new sexual orientation. You read that right. The proposal was signed into law by Seattle’s mayor on Sept. 18. You have to read the city clerk’s official explainer to grasp just how unhinged and expansive this is. The ordinance:
amend[s] the definition of the sexual orientation protected class to recognize gender identities outside the gender binary, recognize pansexuality and asexuality as orientations, and include consensual relationships with multiple partners as an element of attitudes, preferences, and practices pertaining to sexual orientation.
That’s gender theory jibber-jabber. It describes nothing that is real or what any civil society requires. Not only are polyamory and all forms of mutually agreed upon infidelity now legally protected classes and new sexual orientations, but so is pansexuality in a major American city. Of course, “pansexuality” is not a thing. It is merely the new queer system upgrade to the now embarrassingly retrograde binary B. For that matter, so is the fundamentally binary G and L.
Late this summer, The New York Times asked its readers “Is Polyamory Right for You?” The piece’s early-30-something female scribe observed, “At least in my specific corner of the world, it feels as if we’ve reached peak poly saturation.” We have not. They have so much more in mind.
Open is the name of a U.S. advocacy “organization for polyamory and ethical non-monogamy” founded in 2022. It runs active campaigns like Seattle’s across our country. As we have seen, their successes have not been minimal.
After Obergefell v. Hodges
Before Seattle’s landmark regress, The Guardian noted in May that “Polyamorous Americans are celebrating new laws establishing their ‘inherent worth and dignity.’” Note that language. Polyamorists are doing today what same-sex couples desperate for legitimization did more than 20 years ago: Redefining marriage, and thus, the family. This is not a slippery slope claim. Obergefell v. Hodges is the bottom of that slope. We are merely finding polyamory sitting right there next to it.
Of course, Chief Justice John Roberts made this very observation in his strong Obergefell dissent in 2015. He asked, “If not having the opportunity to marry ‘serves to disrespect and subordinate’ gay and lesbian couples, why wouldn’t the same ‘imposition of this disability’ serve to disrespect and subordinate people who find fulfillment in polyamorous relationships?” They are connected like rail cars.
All redefinition of marriage is a civilizational attack, be it no-fault divorce, same-sex marriage, or polyamory.
Civilizing Men
George Gilder explains in the opening of his prescient book, Men and Marriage, how monogamy and male/female complementarity are essential for human civilization because male sexuality is categorically distinct from female. In fact, unbridled male sexuality is every society’s first and must fundamental social problem. Woman’s civilizing influence via normative monogamy is the natural answer. Humanity has called that marriage from pre-civilizational days.
In his first chapter’s opening sentence, Gilder states, “The crucial process of civilization is the subordination of the male sexual impulses and biology to the long-term horizons of female sexuality.” He continues, “The prime fact of life is the sexual superiority of women” because “women transform male lust into love; channel male wanderlust into jobs, homes and families; link men to specific children; rear children into citizens, change hunters into fathers; divert male will to power into a drive to create.”
You undo that, and you undo life-giving civilization.
This is what the whole sexual revolution has always been about. Its ravaging architects have been warning us with every regressive advance. Their strategic appeal to our kindness through manipulative claims of tolerance has paved the way. We continue to fall for it. Polyamory is now advancing because good men fail to connect the dots. Women and children deserve better.
