The Virginia March for Life drew more than 1,000 Virginians to Richmond’s Capitol Square last Wednesday, with voices raised in defense of the unborn and opposition to a looming abortion amendment that would terminate all reasonable protections for the unborn in the Commonwealth.
Speakers shared a message of great love and compassion for women in crisis pregnancy and the unborn, as well as hope for those suffering the effects of abortion. They encouraged boldness in the public square as radically pro-abortion Gov. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., leads a Democrat majority threatening basic rights to life in Virginia.
Pro-life legislators stood behind newly elected Del. Karen Hamilton (R-62), who spoke about Democrats prioritizing the codification of unlimited abortion in Virginia law and the many discrepancies in Virginia code regarding human life.
“Sadly in Virginia, babies are only valuable if they are wanted,” Hamilton said. Nothing though, she added, is impossible with God.
Pro-life physicians rallied behind Dr. Christina Francis, American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists CEO, as she affirmed the dignity of each patient, both born and in the womb. Doctors held signs encouraging Virginians to vote no to unlimited abortion as the issue makes its way to a ballot measure vote this November.
Former pro-choice feminist turned pro-life activist Leslie Davis Blackwell gave a resounding speech, detailing the long-term suffering caused by her own abortions and offering post-abortive women a place of healing and support through Silent No More, an awareness campaign of 22,000 women.
Following the rally and march, Fr. Nicholas Redmond offered a Mass in thanks to God for the gift of human life at St. Peter’s Pro-Cathedral, encouraging the faithful to pray for the conversion of political opponents, even in the midst of great evil.
Redistricting Impact
The state’s eighth annual march comes on the heels of a people’s vote favoring an extreme redistricting amendment in Virginia that eliminated four pro-life Republican represented districts the previous day.
The loss of these voices in the House of Representatives is a devastating blow not just to Virginians, but for the protection of life around the country, said Olivia Gans Turner, Virginia Society for Human Life president on Tuesday. The pro-life Republicans ousted represented a “critical” opposition to unlimited abortion, she said.
The redistricting referendum, voted on April 21 as a ballot measure, is already facing legal action through multiple lawsuits for violating procedural rules and deliberately misleading voters. It was blocked by a circuit court judge just one day after passing.
Next Up: Unlimited Abortion
Keynote speaker Mayra Rodriguez, a former Planned Parenthood employee who won a lawsuit against the abortion provider when she was fired after repeatedly reporting concerns to her superiors, directed pro-lifers to be active voters. Referencing the redistricting referendum she encouraged the crowd to not just march today, but “be ready for tomorrow.”
That “tomorrow” will come in November, when Virginians will vote on an extreme abortion amendment Democrats prioritized in the first 2026 session. Passed along party lines, the amendment seeks to dismantle the few protections still in place for the unborn in Virginia, essentially codifying unlimited abortion without basic guardrails.
The amendment’s language is broad. It includes no age limit, no parental rights, and fails to explicitly ban partial-birth abortions. There is no inclusion of required medical treatment for babies who survive an abortion. Freedom of conscience protections are absent. Anyone “aiding” a woman in killing her unborn child is granted special protections.
Virginia Democrats are testing the courts; the leading language of the redistricting measure was quickly struck down, but will likely now battle through appeals before reaching the state’s Supreme Court.
Misleading and obscure language in the abortion amendment will test the ethics of the justice system in the Commonwealth. In the meantime, Virginians are encouraged to read carefully.
