On this episode of The Federalist Radio Hour, Reason Senior Editor Robby Soave joins Culture Editor Emily Jashinsky to discuss his new book “Tech Panic: Why We Shouldn’t Fear Facebook and the Future.”
“I don’t think government policy for everyone should devolve to the level where there are some people who can’t control themselves. Some people are harmed by this, so it needs to be prohibited from everyone … I don’t think we should place limits on everyone because some people are not in control of themselves,” Soave said.
“I don’t know why [changing Section] 230 is even on the table for the right because it’s just gonna be, okay, you take away liability protections from these companies, they will censor more speech and they will censor your speech, they will censor the speech they are most afraid of and distrustful of and that they understand the least, which will be provocative speech in both a right and far-left direction,” he added. “They would be shooting themselves in the foot.”
While Soave said there are certainly some issues that need extrapolation, he doesn’t agree with all claims that Big Tech is silencing people.
“We hear about this vast silencing going on but the reality to me seems to be that it’s like people are less silenced than they have ever been in human history,” he said.
