On this episode of The Federalist Radio Hour, The Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro joins Culture Editor Emily Jashinsky to discuss his new book “The Authoritarian Moment: How the Left Weaponized America’s Institutions Against Dissent.”

“As we become more of an urban nation, as we become a much more populous nation as we become a nation that has drifted away from notions of founding ideals and shared commonality and for example religious life, we need more authority over the top of us to sort of govern,” Shapiro said.

Shapiro said he’s seen this trend take hold of the American psyche.

“Whenever there’s a problem, there’s this idea that it’s the government’s job to solve it almost as sort of a natural reaction to what’s going on around us and that holds true for everything from the pandemic to ‘gun violence.'” he said.

Shapiro also details how the left’s attempts to renormalize American institutions are gaining traction and losing steam.

“I think where the left is going wrong right now is they’re not pushing incrementally anymore,” he said. “They’re driving blowback because they’re pushing so radically hard so fast that people are noticing. But for years this has been their tactic inside nearly every institution: to push a little bit here, you push a little bit there, and then pretty soon you’ve moved the entire institution, you know, way left.”
