Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul was ambushed by a mob Thursday night following President Donald Trump’s Republican convention speech at the White House.

“Just got attacked by an angry mob of over 100, one block away from the White House,” Paul wrote on Twitter at 1:39 a.m. Friday. “Thank you to @DCPoliceDept for literally saving our lives from a crazed mob.”

Videos on Twitter show Paul and his wife surrounded by the mob as they make their way back to their D.C. hotel escorted by law enforcement.

While the demonstrators invoked Breonna Taylor’s name demanding the Kentucky senator “say her name,” Paul was member of the upper chamber who introduced the “Justice for Breonna Taylor Act” barring no-knock warrants.

Paul is no stranger to being a victim of assault. In 2017, Paul suffered an attack from an upset neighbor in Bowling Green, Kentucky that left the senator with multiple broken ribs and a precipitated case of pneumonia. The injuries kept Paul away from the nation’s capital as lawmakers debated tax reform. Paul was forced to have part of his lungs removed.
