Politico reporter Tim Alberta set out to answer the question, “How did Donald Trump become president of the United States?” On this episode of the Federalist Radio Hour, Alberta joins Ben Domenech to discuss his new book, “American Carnage: On the Front Lines of the Republican Civil War and the Rise of President Trump.”

They recount the history of the Tea Party, the 2016 Republican convention, and how political judgements made by conservatives like Paul Ryan, Mark Meadows, and others look in retrospect.

“What Trump sensed that there was this deep and abiding weakness in the Republican Party and he took advantage of it,” Alberta said. “When Trump recognizes that all these guys who were once outspoken against him–Graham, Perry, Rubio, Cruz–and now they’re mostly terrified to speak out against him, Trump senses that blood in the water and he’s going to keep pushing this envelope.”
