Tequila. Margaritas are made with tequila. Not vodka, Cory Booker.
The vegan senator from New Jersey (and 2020 candidate) fumbled through the recipe when asked what goes in a margarita on BuzzFeed News’ “AM to DM” show Thursday morning.
“Um, so, margarita, there’s fruit, and there is ice, and there is…uh, vodka,” Booker said.
“Oh noooo,” replied host Hayes Brown.
“Tequila! I’m sorry!” he said, correcting himself after someone off camera shouted at him.

To be fair, Cory Booker does not drink alcohol. Heck, he doesn’t even eat cheese. Booker really should not be asked to weigh in on any topics related to food or drink. Allegedly, he was even the designated driver on his own 21st birthday. This still does not excuse the weirdness exuding from someone not knowing the key ingredient in one of America’s favorite cocktails.
Here is how to make a classic margarita:
2 ounces tequila
3/4 ounce orange liqueur (preferably Cointreau)
3/4 ounce lime juice
1 teaspoon agave nectar
Prepare glass with a salted rim if desired. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake until chilled. Strain into prepared glass over ice. Garnish with a slice of lime.
This is the way good Americans enjoy their favorite Mexican beverage. As for Booker, he can enjoy his glass of ice and fruit, and maybe even pour one out for his old friend T-Bone.
