Republican candidate Ron DeSantis has defeated Democrat Andrew Gillum to become the next governor of Florida.

Republican candidate Ron DeSantis has defeated Democrat Andrew Gillum on Tuesday to become the next governor of Florida.

Gillum conceded victory to DeSantis Tuesday night after narrowly trailing behind. Fox News shows DeSantis was leading with 49.9 percent of the vote to Gillum’s 48.9 percent, with 99 percent of precincts reporting. In the months leading up to the election, Gillum was projected to win the gubernatorial bid.

Republican Gov. Rick Scott is projected to defeat incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson to become the next U.S. senator to represent Florida. Fox News called the race for Scott on Tuesday night by 50.4 percent to 49.6 percent, with 99 percent of precincts reporting. In the weeks leading up to the election, numerous polls had projected Nelson as the likely winner, though the race was competitive leading into Election Day.
