Charlie Kirk was murdered on Sept. 10, 2025. Millions of Americans lost their breath in despair at this violent tragedy. The FBI and Utah authorities had Tyler Robinson in custody within days, charged him with Kirk’s murder, and Utah prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
On March 31, the defense team in the Charlie Kirk murder case filed a simple, customary, and ordinary motion. It stated: “regarding the firearm evidence, the defense has been provided with an ATF summary report which indicates that the ATF was unable to identify the bullet recovered at autopsy to the rifle allegedly tied to Mr. Robinson.”
This sent media outlets, influencers, and clickbait grifters into frenzied animation. A Daily Mail headline read, “Bullet used to kill Charlie Kirk did NOT match rifle allegedly used by suspect Tyler Robinson, new court filing claims.” A PBS headline asked, “Did a bullet analysis clear Charlie Kirk’s suspected killer?”
MSN claimed, “Bullet mismatch rocks Charlie Kirk murder case.” A People headline read, “Bullet that killed Charlie Kirk doesn’t match Tyler Robinson’s rifle, his lawyer’s claim.” TMZ boldly asserted in its headline that “Docs claim bullet used doesn’t match alleged rifle.” Countless others ran with this fake news.

It did not take long for influencers and their followers to fabricate further on social media. “Bullet fragments don’t match rifle in Charlie Kirk assassination case” was trending on X the day after the motion became public.
Podcasters and others with millions of followers wondered aloud if the case against Robinson was falling apart. The headlines say yes, so who really killed Kirk? It was a different gun. Robinson is a patsy. I bet it was a conspiracy! Was Turning Point USA in on it? Erika? Israel? To borrow a line from Mark Twain, a lie can travel around the internet in nanoseconds while the truth remains sealed in a court file.
But then this week, the judge in the Robinson case unsealed the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) report regarding the bullet taken from Kirk’s body at autopsy and the firearm that allegedly fired that bullet. While the defense motion was consistent with the report, hardly any of the headlines or speculators racking up clicks were remotely close. The ATF report dispels very quickly their barren conclusions and baseless intrigue.
The ATF is the best in the world at forensic analysis of firearms, tool markings, and bullets. The ATF report’s findings do not offer opinions, but expert forensic and scientific findings performed by trained experts in a laboratory. The results are peer-reviewed for technical, examination, and administrative accuracy, rooted in testing and policies developed over decades.
So, what does this report say? Contrary to headlines, the report expressly refutes the idea that the bullet found in Kirk’s body “did not match the gun.” The ATF forensic expert concluded that the bullet found in Kirk’s body “could not be identified or excluded (emphasis added)” as having been fired by Robinson’s alleged weapon. The bullet was so “deformed” and “damaged,” the ATF’s analysis about that single point was “inconclusive,” the report says.
When a round is fired from a weapon, the projectile collects rifling striations — or spiral striping — on it while traveling through the barrel of the weapon. The “rifling” creates the spin of the bullet but also leaves a unique signature from a particular weapon.
It is a common finding that a highly degraded fragment will not produce rifling characteristics because of damage to the bullet caused by impact. The ATF even concluded that the shredded fragments were “not suitable for microscopic comparison” because of the damage to them as they tumbled through Charlie’s body.
The ATF report did not conclude that the bullet didn’t match Robinson’s alleged gun. Conversely, the expert analysis simply said the bullet is too damaged to test for rifling characteristics.

The ATF report does offer quite a bit of other evidence that is not only devastating to Robinson, but also to conspiracy enthusiasts and their listeners. Most notably, the round recovered in Kirk’s body was a .30 caliber class round. That’s extremely relevant because the 30.06 Mauser rifle found at the scene fires a .30 caliber class round. It also excludes all weapons incapable of firing a .30 class caliber round (such as an M-16).

The report also confirms there was only one spent shell casing in the “operable” bolt-action rifle. This is significant because we know only one shot was fired and only one spent round was found with the crime scene’s 30.06 rifle. Bolt-action rifles do not eject the spent cartridge upon firing the weapon. It would remain in the weapon where authorities found it.
ATF experts also confirmed that the fired shell casing had tool markings consistent with those produced by Robinson’s alleged rifle. Said differently, the bullet fired from that shell casing was fired by Robinson’s alleged weapon. Also, the 30.06 Mauser recovered at the crime scene was “operable.” This simply means the gun was capable of firing the round that murdered Kirk.

All of this evidence will be presented by experts at trial. It is hardly refutable and damning to Robinson’s defense.
This is not even to mention filings by the state alleging Robinson’s DNA was on the weapon, the shell casing, and the unspent rounds. Or Robinson’s apparent confessions and admissions to his lover, Lance Twiggs. Or the handwritten note Robinson reportedly left for Twiggs announcing his intention to kill Kirk. Or the CCTV footage from the rooftop access, in which Robinson’s parents said they recognized him. And then all the other evidence not yet made public.
The case against Robinson will be nearly insurmountable for his defense team. The evidence is overwhelming, leaving little doubt about his intentions and actions on Sept. 10. He is presumed innocent and will get all of the process he is due.
Consuming news and discerning the truth is a chore. It rarely comes in the form of a headline or 280 characters. Instead, it presents itself through expertise, facts, and evidence. Beware of wild speculation. Beware of clickbait conjecture. Beware of the profit motive from such deceptions. Like evil, fake news lurks!
