On this episode of The Federalist Radio Hour, “The Daily Stoic” podcast host Ryan Holiday joins Federalist Managing Editor Madeline Osburn and Culture Editor Emily Jashinsky to discuss his new book “Courage Is Calling: Fortune Favors the Brave.”

“Aristotle puts courage on a spectrum and he says that on the one hand, there is cowardice, but on the other end, there’s also recklessness,” Holiday said. “So the idea that courage rests in the middle between these two opposites, to me, is an interesting way to think about it because are there people who have, let’s say taken COVID to a preposterous extreme, you know? Won’t leave their house? Treating it more seriously than they do all sorts of other risks that, up until March of 2020, they never thought twice about.”

“And then conversely, there’s also people who have decided to not consider it at all,” he added. “I think it’s important that we think about courage not as simply the opposite of fear because fearlessness is troublesome as well.”

Courage, Holiday said, is a virtue that is tried and tested by time and applies in any situation.

“What I love about these cardinal virtues and why I think they’ve stood the test of time over, you know, 2,500 or so years is that they really do answer — and not simply, not always straightforwardly — what our duty or obligation is in every single situation we face in life, big and small,” Holiday concluded.
