Huffington Post’s senior political reporter is circling the wagons around Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and slinging arrows at anyone who criticizes the Democratic presidential candidate’s false claims of American Indian heritage.

Jennifer Bendery posted a screenshot of an email from the Republican National Committee Monday, complaining the headline “The Fauxcahontas Flip Flop,” about Warren’s public reversal about her Native American heritage, as racist.

“Meanwhile, as Democratic presidential candidates speak at a Native American forum, the RNC is all in on fueling racism against Native Americans,” Bendery wrote on Twitter.

When asked by conservative commentator Stephen Miller how the use of the word “Fauxcahontas” was racist and whether Warren was indeed a Native American woman, Bendery simply repeated her claim that the use of the word “Fauxcahontas” was racist.

“The use of ‘Fauxcahontas’ is incredibly disrespectful to Native people. Full stop. This is not rocket science,” Bendery wrote back.

Warren’s claimed ethnic identity has long been a source of controversy for the Massachusetts senator, since her first run for high public office in 2012, and has been a favorite line of attack from President Donald Trump. He labeled the far-left Democrat “Pocahontas” on the campaign trail in reference to the famous Native American associated with the colonial settlement at Jamestown.

It has been well-documented that Warren lied about her ancestry and identified herself as a Cherokee Native American to gain leverage throughout her legal and political career.

Last fall, Warren released the results of a DNA test to prove her ancestry, but that backfired by showing no proof that Warren even has any Native American ancestry, only that there is “strong evidence” to suggest she has a Native American relative 6 to 10 generations in her past. The results of the DNA test show that if she did indeed have a Native American relative, Warren would be anywhere from 1/64th to 1/1,024th Native American.

The DNA test has been roundly criticized by tribal leaders, who called Warren’s use of the test last year to claim Cherokee heritage as “inappropriate and wrong.” Warren has since identified has a white woman. At a forum addressing Native Americans Tuesday, she also apologized for lying about her heritage.
