Lyman: GOP Needs To Meet Gen Z Voters On Social Media

“I have a message, not to Gen Z voters — of which I am one — but to Republicans, which is: You need to meet Gen Z voters where they are, which is on social media. One of the concerns I have is we hear [Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] may run in 2028, and I hear from a lot of older folks that [laughing] response, like ‘Oh, let her run, this will be funny.’ I don’t think it will be funny. Because if you remember, President Trump won in 2016 because he had a very simple populist message. Young people are on TikTok and they are seeing 30-second sound bites from AOC saying very populist things like, ‘No one should go hungry, you should have access to good health care, and children should get an education.’ At the end of it, [viewers] say ‘That’s a socialist? Then I’m a socialist, too!'” The Federalist’s Brianna Lyman said on The Faulkner Focus. “The problem is … Republicans are sitting back from their perches and [responding to this trend] by saying, ‘Well, let’s teach about Leninism and Marxism and Mao Zedong.’ That is not a winning message.”
