H.R. McMaster On America’s Enemies And Most Crucial Foreign Policy Challenges

On this episode of The Federalist Radio Hour, Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, former Trump National Security Advisor, joins Ben Domenech for a conversation on his new book, “Battlegrounds: The Fight to Defend the Free World.”

While McMaster says that his book does discuss his time in the White House, he makes it clear that it is not meant to be a tell-all, but instead an attempt to inform and explain how the foreign policy-making process can be successful.

“I don’t think it would be useful to you know to go ad hominem like as so many of so many of these books do these days. What can we agree are the biggest challenges we face? How do we work together? How do we work together to strengthen our nation and to overcome those challenges?” he said.

McMaster detailed policy initiatives the White House implemented concerning China, Russia, and other countries. He argues historians will call some of the Trump Administration’s decisions “the greatest shift in foreign policy since the Cold War.”

“What we tried to do really with all of these crucial challenges to our security and our prosperity and influence is to examine the assumptions on which previous policy was based scrutinize those assumptions challenged them, and then try to understand these complex challenges on their own terms,” McMaster said.

“If you run the process well and you do give the president options, my experience was that you get really good policy outcomes. And I think in that first year the Trump administration that we implemented a lot of like 180-degree shift in policy that I think we’re long overdue,” he explained.
