When he’s not busy posting angsty photos on Instagram or hawking his self-serving memoir, former FBI director James Comey has been giving money to Democrats running for Congress.
Federal Election Commission filings show Comey has donated $2,700 — the maximum amount of money an individual can donate without violating federal campaign finance regulations — to Abigail Spanberger on September 23. The Democratic congressional candidate is in a hotly contested race against Republican Rep. David Brat.
FEC filings show Comey also donated $2,700 to Democrat Jennifer Wexton, who is challenging Republican Rep. Barbara Comstock.
Comey’s generosity to Democrats comes amid scrutiny for his behavior as head of the FBI, which has been investigated for political bias during its probe into Donald Trump’s campaign and Hillary Clinton’s use of a private, unsecured server during her tenure as secretary of state.
An inspector general report critiqued former FBI employees for exhibiting political bias in text messages, a bias that critics say affected the agency’s handling of these two investigations. Comey has admitted that the way he handled the investigation into Clinton’s emails was tainted by his assumption that she would win the presidency.
