Steve Forbes, chairman and editor-in-chief of Forbes media, co-authored the new book, Reviving America, in which he lays out what issues must be addressed in order to fix the American economy. He joined the Federalist Radio Hour, along with Veronique de Rugy from the Mercatus Center, to discuss GOP candidates tax codes, healthcare, and more.
“Everyone senses, correctly, that things are going very wrong here in the U.S. and around the world,” Forbes said. “The feeling is that those in authority don’t know what they’re doing or if they do, they don’t know how to do it.”
He suggested if we focus on three big reforms then we will start to see the economy roaring back, starting with healthcare, the tax code and and the Federal Reserve. “You have to get those three big things right and the others will fall into place,” Forbes said.
On the topic of Donald Trump, Forbes said he thinks Trump’s success comes from his way of tapping into the anger, worry, and contempt that people have for the political class. “The very fact that he says things that people find offensive, they like the fact that he didn’t back down when the media went after him,” he said. “People like that– they felt it was strength and so if he got in her would shake things up.”
Veronique de Rugy is a senior research fellow at George Mason University’s Mercatus Center who has researched and written about the tax policies proposed by the 2016 presidential candidates. “The tax code is grossly unfair. The are so many tax deductions and tax credits directed at special interests.” She said an ideal tax plan, “would restore growth and fairness by replacing the current system. It would eliminate special interest and tax loopholes.”
