Veronique de Rugy, senior research fellow at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, weighs in on the House’s tax reform bill and ways the Senate might change it. De Rugy also discusses the future of employment, deductions, and government spending.

Will the elimination of various deductions have political consequences for certain Representatives? “Voters are happy to shrug off bad policy decisions, or expensive policy decisions, without asking too many questions because they’re not shouldering most of the cost,” she said.

De Rugy said she is bothered by how lawmakers continue to pass the budget and refuse to touch government spending. “If you’re not going to cut spending, no one deserves a tax cut,” she said. “All we are doing is effectively pushing higher taxes on our children.”
