Col. James R. McDonough (ret.) is a West Point graduate, class of 1969. He is the author of the book "Platoon Leader," a memoir of small unit leadership in combat in Vietnam that is studied at West Point and in ROTC today and since its publication in 1985. As its commander, he deployed with elements of his airborne infantry brigade to Rwanda and surrounding countries in the summer of 1994.
