As of Wednesday morning, Donald Trump is projected to win the battleground state of Michigan. This call came after he was already projected to win the presidential race.
At the time of publication, Trump is leading Harris in the state 49.8 percent to 48.3 percent with more than 95 percent of votes counted, according to The New York Times.
The victory marked Trump’s sweep of the Democrats’ so-called “blue wall” of the northern swing states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. After Trump was projected to win multiple significant Sunbelt states, securing the “blue wall” became “Harris’ best shot” for victory, as NPR noted early on Wednesday morning. But the razor-thin margins slowly widened in favor of Trump throughout the night.
Michiganders turned out strong for the former president, even in seemingly unexpected locations.
The Detroit Free Press reported on Wednesday morning that Trump won the Detroit suburb of Dearborn — a Detroit suburb in which more than 54 percent of the population is of Arab descent, reports say.
“Trump won [Dearborn] with 42.48% of the vote over Vice President Kamala Harris, who received 36.26%,” The Detroit Free Press reported, citing results apparently provided to the outlet by City Clerk George Darany.
Once a reliable Democrat voting block, some Muslim voters have recently become disillusioned with Democrats over what they perceive as insufficient support for Gazan militants. Before he was ousted from the race, President Joe Biden lost the Democrat primary in Dearborn, after anti-Israel groups encouraged voters to select “uncommitted” on their ballots to show their discontentment with Biden, as The Federalist previously reported.
Democrat Mayor Amer Ghalib of nearby Hamtramck endorsed Trump in September, according to a local ABC affiliate. Ghalib recently spoke at Trump’s final rally in Grand Rapids, urging voters to support the former president.
As of Tuesday morning, Donald Trump also “made significant gains in Hamtramck compared to 2020,” according to The Detroit Free Press.
“[W]e’re winning overwhelming support from the Muslim and Arab voters right here in Michigan, can you believe it?” Trump said during another Michigan rally in October. “[T]he Muslim and Arab voters in Michigan and across the country want a stop to the endless wars and a return to peace in the Middle East.”
