Former President Donald Trump mocked Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz immediately after the vice-presidential debate Tuesday night, following the Democrat’s bizarre brag about his friendships “with school shooters.”
“Governor, you previously opposed an assault weapons ban but only later in your political career did you change your position,” said CBS’s Norah O’Donnell. “Why?”
“Yeah, I sat in that office with those Sandy Hook parents,” Walz said, referring to families of the 20 Connecticut children killed by a deranged gunman in 2012. “I’ve become friends with school shooters,” Walz added. “I’ve seen it.”
Trump shared a graphic of a new yard sign with the slogan “Trump/Vance ’24,” followed by “NOT FRIENDS WITH SCHOOL SHOOTERS.”
Walz, who was visibly nervous throughout the prime-time event, also struggled to explain why he claimed to have been in Hong Kong during the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre after multiple reports contradicted his story.
“I’m a knucklehead at times,” he said. “Many times I will talk a lot. I will get caught up in the rhetoric.”
Here are some of the best memes of the night.
Republican J.D. Vance’s knowing glance toward the camera during the debate was instant meme fodder.
Others on social media mocked the CBS News moderators’ obvious bias toward the Democrat, Kamala Harris’ choice of Walz over Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro for her running mate, and Walz’s infamous signing of a law putting menstrual products in boys’ bathrooms.
