Hypocrite Celebs Don’t Deserve Your Deference On Masks Or Anything Else

All the photos circulating of celebrities flashing maskless grins at Sunday’s Super Bowl while students in California are still forced to cover their faces don’t tell us anything we didn’t already know: The Hollywood cabal at large is so out of touch, their thoughts about how you should live your life should be desk rejected until proven otherwise.

It’s not just their bad Covid takes, like when stars (and guests such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) displayed their belief in a social hierarchy as they flouted the same Covid rules they forced the event’s servers to follow.

We already know not to pay attention to what people like California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti tell us to do about Covid, as they run around violating their own orders while rubbing shoulders with celebs (but don’t worry — even when they were breaking their own mask mandates, at least they thought to hold their breath). The problem isn’t their tacit admission that Covid restrictions are meaningless political theater, of course; it’s their egotistical eagerness to push those same restrictions they defy onto everyone else.

But it’s not just about Covid. Most of these people think they’re far better than you, and people who think they’re better than you deserve no deference or respect from you when they tell you how to live your life. Look no further than Bette Midler, who trashed West Virginia voters as “poor” and “illiterate” because she disagreed with one of their senators.

The self-appointed elites’ ridiculous and dangerous notions about relationships, family, and parenting are just as worthy of mockery and rejection. Last week’s news about journalist Van Jones’ decision to have a baby with a friend and “consciously co-parent” together is just the latest example of the kind of nature-rejecting selfishness that is more in vogue than raising an actual family in Hollywood.

Even more disgusting is the preaching from people such as Michelle Williams, who used her platform at the Golden Globes in 2020 to brag about killing her unborn children and glorify the action for other women.

More recently, we’ve seen Mr. and Mrs. Meghan Markle take personal offense at the “bonkers” First Amendment, doing their best to pooh-pooh freedom of speech everywhere their opinions weren’t asked for.

Or Lizzo, glamorizing weight gain during a pandemic in which obesity is a top comorbidity.

Garbage takes like these don’t mean there aren’t sane anomalies in Hollywood, but they do mean your default should be not to listen to the fake moralizing — or anything from that crowd, unless the rare sane comment proves itself to be the exception on its own merits. More often than not, all each new instance of hierarchical stupidity proves is how unworthy its perpetrators are of your respect.
