“Rather than seeing any self-examination, or looking at why they were able to fall for such a ridiculous story, people got awards for their reporting.”

After being threatened with legal action from the Trump Organization, MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell apologized and retracted his reporting on Wednesday night’s show for peddling unverified information about President Trump’s tax returns and connections to Russia.

“Tonight, we are retracting the story,” he said in his opening monologue. “I should not have said it on air or posted it on Twitter. I was wrong to do so.”

An MSNBC spokesperson declined to specify what action, if any, the network or NBC News might take as a result of O’Donnell’s false reporting.

On Thursday, Federalist Senior Editor Mollie Hemingway joined Fox News’ “Fox and Friends” to discuss how mainstream media outlets have failed to examine how they got the Russia story wrong and instead continue to report anonymous and unverified information.

“The Mueller probe concluded with not only no information about Donald Trump colluding with Russia to steal the 2016 election, but not a single American. There is no evidence of any American doing this,” she said. “It was so sad to see it for years, this daily drumbeat before the Mueller report ended. To see that some people are still doing it months after is embarrassing and sad.”

Hemingway noted that the failures are not just at MSNBC, but across multiple media outlets. At CNN, reporter Manu Raju falsely reported that Donald Trump Jr. was offered encryption codes to look at hacked DNC emails. CNN also had to retract a story that claimed former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci was under investigation for his alleged ties to Russia.

“Rather than seeing any self-examination, or looking at why they were able to fall for such a ridiculous story, people got awards for their reporting,” Hemingway said. “And the main story, which is how this treasonous collusion narrative got started, how it was weaponized, and how it was fed throughout the U.S. government is a story that continues to be undercovered at every media outlet.”
