Emily Ekins is a Research Fellow and Director of Polling at the Cato Institute. She joins The Federalist Radio Hour to discuss her latest study, “The State of Free Speech and Tolerance in America.” She surveyed Americans about their views on campus free speech, religious liberty, political expression and more.

“I realized some of the issues that really mattered where not what is legal to say, but what do we tolerate in our political discourse,” she said. “What types of ideas should get you fired from your job? What types of speakers should be allowed on college campuses?”

Should we be concerned about free speech rights, especially the perception of the rights of media to express opinions?

“We found that 63 percent of Republicans agree that journalists are an enemy of the American people,” Ekins said. “But at the same time Republicans don’t think that government should try to regulate the biased media outlets.”
