During Thursday night’s GOP debate on Fox News, Donald Trump pushed back against the widely held opinion that his hands are small — insisting that they are large and powerful.

Over the past week, Marco Rubio has been mocking Trump for his small hand size. During a campaign stop in Virginia on Sunday, Rubio made a reference to the real estate tycoon’s hand size — implying that another part of his body was also small.

Trump brought this up during the Fox News debate. He first stated that the Florida senator wasn’t such a lightweight after all before insisting that his own hands were large and beautiful.

“He hit my hands,” Trump said. “Nobody has ever hit my hands. I’ve never heard of this. Look at those hands. Are they small hands? And he referred to my hands — if they’re small something else must be small — I guarantee you there’s no problem. I guarantee you.”

Trump’s insistence that he has never been mocked for having tiny T-Rex hands is a flat-out lie. He has been dogged as a “short-fingered vulgarian” for over 30 years, an insult which reportedly offended him deeply enough to prompt him to send hand-written notes to magazines that repeatedly mock his hands.

Yet Trump doubled down on that claim in a follow-up interview with CNN’s Dana Bash after the debate.

“I only made a joke about my hands,” Trump said. “I have very powerful hands.”

“Look at these hands,” he said. “Aren’t they beautiful? I have very powerful hands, large hands, relatively large hands, and a politician said I didn’t have large hands. I’ve never heard that one.”
