The founders predicted that there would be a day when the federal government abuses its authority. Mike Farris, co-founder of the Convention of the States Project, joined the Federalist Radio Hour to explain how the founders knew we would need structural changes to reign in that abuse of power when that day comes. Also joining the show, and opposing the call for a convention of the states, was Phyllis Schlafly, founder of Eagle Forum.
Farris explained the current movements to use Article V of the Constitution, to call for a convention of the states, and to work with state legislators to restore checks and balances. “The thing that we know for sure is that you have to have two-thirds of the states agree on the topic to call a convention, otherwise we would have had a dozen or more conventions by now,” he said.
Schlafly disagreed with both the need for a convention and a state’s power to call for a convention, arguing that Article V gives the sole power to Congress to call for a convention. “I wouldn’t want the kind of changes that a lot of people who will show up as delegates to this alleged convention, would be supportive of,” she said. “We should beat up on (our representatives), and not beat up on the Constitution.”
