Did Tom Steyer’s Climate PAC Pay For That Awful Cory Gardner Ad?

A PAC founded and bankrolled by liberal climate crony Tom Steyer may have funded that terrible Colorado ad accusing Cory Gardner of wanting to ban condoms.

Earlier today, we posted a report about an hilariously awful anti-Cory Gardner that recently started airing in Colorado. In that ad, which was put on the air by the extreme pro-abortion group NARAL, a man and a woman are talking about how condoms in Colorado are completely sold out. There are none to be found anywhere. Why? “Because Cory Gardner banned birth control,” one of the ad’s narrators says.

You can watch or read a transcript of the full radio ad here.

But who paid for that ad?

An examination of Federal Election Commission (FEC) disclosure filings suggests that a political action committee (PAC) founded and bankrolled by liberal climate crony Tom Steyer was likely the money behind NARAL’s laughably bad ad. Under current federal election rules, organizations that run electioneering ads right before an election are required to disclose the money behind those ads within 24 hours of when the ads air.

According to the 24-hour FEC report from NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado IE Committee, the NARAL affiliate in Colorado received $239,000 from Steyer’s NextGen Climate Action Committee on October 27, 2014.

The next day, on October 28, NARAL spent $238,464.67 on the anti-Cory Gardner radio ad. Of that $238,464.67, $198,550 went to Waterfront Strategies/GMMB to pay for radio ad production. The remaining $39,914.67 went to Bully Pulpit Interactive LLC to pay for promotion and airing of the ad.

Both Waterfront Strategies/GMMB and Bully Pulpit Interactive are based in Washington, D.C.

Steyer’s NextGen Climate Action PAC has raised $76.1 million during the 2014 election cycle and spent over $57 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Nearly $67 million of the money raised by the PAC has been contributed by Steyer himself. Every dime spent has been spent either in favor of Democrats or against Republicans.
